TURNING   SEQUENCE

of a

BEECH BOWL

From 120 kilo part of a tree trunk to a roughed out bowl in Beech wood.

Blank ready to shape with 12" ruler and 330mm face plate to give an idea of size.

Blank with corners cut off with face plate attached with 8 size 8mm * 50 mm Coach screws. To some of you this might be a bit of an over kill but I would not like this size of wood to come off at any speed. As I haven't got a band saw big enough to cut the blank into shape I use a chainsaw to rough shape the block and make final tweaks when the block is on the lathe. The final tweaks are more for getting it to balance as a 100kgs plus blank can be a bit awkward when it is spinning and out of balance.

Hoisting on to lathe using a 1 ton engine hoist and ropes. This saves me from walking around with a high pitched voice and also it is this moment when you do not rely on granny knots.

Ready to turn
My apologies for jumping these sequences but I got carried away with turning the outside shape using a 1 inch bowl gouge. I got to a pleasing shape then cut a recess with a ½" bowl gouge to take a 6 inch diameter, 4 jaw self centering engineers chuck with wood turner jaws. I mounted the chuck to the bowl while it was still on the lathe then used the engine hoist and ropes to turn the blank around and remount the chuck and bowl onto the lathe.

Roughing out the inside
